Hurricanes and Tropical Depressions can cause catastrophic damage to your home from the coastline to several hundred miles inland. It is important to prepare your home for a hurricane before the storm is close so you can ensure your home is secure and limit the amount of damage to your home and property.

Young Carpentry and Home Maintenance can prepare your home for a hurricane, by taking the following precautions and more:

  • Remove weak and dead trees or tree limbs on your property that could fall against your home.
  • Cover all of your home’s windows. Permanent storm shutters offer the best protection for windows. Another option is to board up windows with 5/8” marine plywood, cut to fit and ready to install. Tape does not prevent windows from breaking, but helps the glass not blow around if it is broken.
  • Clean out loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts to help prevent flooding during heavy rain.
  • Make sure your roof has hurricane clips installed. They are found where the trusses meet the walls. This will help reduce roof damage.
  • Reinforce your garage doors; if wind enters a garage it can cause dangerous and expensive structural damage.
  • Plan to bring in all outdoor furniture, decorations, plants, garbage cans and anything else that is not tied down. Young Carpentry and Home Maintenance will help you prepare your home and property for a hurricane. Whether you are on the coast or out of town we will gladly ensure your home is taken care of.
